Basic Educational Policy

The University’s founding philosophy of tri-fold love defines human education through love for God, humanity, and the Earth based on the teachings of Christianity. It demands cultivation of a spirit of tolerance for one’s neighbors in all their diversity and a spirit of respect for the Earth, which is the cornerstone of the continued existence of humankind. Its purpose is to carry on the University’s founding philosophy, to put into practice the teachings of the ideal of nurturing a healthy society on wholesome land, to link the Earth’s gift of life to future generations as a university that weaves together life, and to foster the development of graduates who will help improve the welfare of humankind.

The University has been offering education based on this founding philosophy for 80 years, during which time it has contributed greatly to the promotion of agriculture. Our new educational efforts, which carry on this tradition, seek to maintain and develop sustainable agriculture in harmony with nature based on a foundation of agriculture, food, environment, and life. Their ultimate goal is to foster the development of graduates who will contribute to the continued existence and welfare of humankind and animals on the global stage by responding proactively to change in the world, discerning the issues that need to be addressed, and striving to resolve them with broad-reaching, flexible, and comprehensive judgment. In short, our educational programs are designed to produce graduates who possess the ability to solve complex problems involving agriculture and to think about things from a multifaceted perspective—graduates who combine the ability to think in a comprehensive manner with exact judgment and a rich sense of humanity.

The educational philosophy of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Sciences guides a series of educational and research programs designed to put into practice the University’s founding philosophy of nurturing a healthy society on wholesome land through the concept of tri-fold love for God, humanity, and the Earth. The University’s basic philosophy of nurturing a healthy society on wholesome land proclaims the institution’s fundamental mission. In keeping with this philosophy, the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Sciences has focused its educational and research programs on the idea that humankind is supported by the environment, plants, animals, and food, and it has identified the maintenance of sound connections linking land, pasturage, cattle, milk, and people; nature, plants (crops), animals (livestock), food, and people; and the environment, plants, animals, resources, energy, and people as the concrete embodiment of that basic philosophy. Each of the College’s three departments has responsibility for certain of those connections as they work together while blending the natural and social sciences in their areas of specialization and strengthening partnerships among their respective fields to put into practice the ideal of nurturing a healthy society on wholesome land through the concept of tri-fold love for God, humanity, and the Earth.

The School of Veterinary Medicine strives to live up to the University’s founding philosophy (which is based on the concept of tri-fold love, the idea of nurturing a healthy society on wholesome land, and education through practical study) by fostering a rich sense of humanity through the study of veterinary medicine, veterinary health and nursing, and related fields and training graduates capable of contributing to human and animal welfare as well as harmony and coexistence with the natural environment. In short, the School endeavors to train graduates who will master specialized knowledge and techniques along with comprehensive judgment so that they can contribute to human and animal health, environmental conservation, and a stable food supply, all from an international perspective. The School also seeks to fulfill its role as an institution of higher education that lies at the heart of knowledge and culture in its local community and as a base for revitalization of that region in the future by training future leaders.

The School of Veterinary Medicine offers an educational program in the applied sciences with a practical focus rooted in the life sciences, including medicine, agriculture, biology, and a broad range of other academic disciplines. The Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Science work together to implement their basic educational policy of training graduates to deliver team-based veterinary care by ensuring they master a broad range of specialized knowledge and techniques required in a variety of fields.
